Think about work, a challenge or a project you have been focused on over the past four weeks. You can choose a longer period if it better reflects your usual experience. Use the same period for all your answers.

How often was each statement true for you during that time?

If a situation did not occur, or you had no opportunity to respond to it, choose N/A, rather than “Never”.

    1. 1.I wanted to get started, but I did not know where to begin.
    2. 2.I felt overwhelmed by what I needed to do to start something I wanted to pursue.
    3. 3.My days were full of routine tasks that felt meaningless and did not help me move towards a clear goal.
    4. 4.I felt disconnected from other people who were pursuing goals.
    5. 5.Setbacks left me so discouraged that I felt like giving up.
    6. 6.When I faced a setback, I looked for another way forward or tried to learn from it.
    7. 7.Once I chose a goal, I used the support and resources available to me.
    8. 8.When I noticed I was giving too much of myself to the challenge, I made time to look after myself.
    9. 9.When it became clear that I could not reach a goal, I was able to let it go, even if it mattered to me.
    10. 10.I found enjoyment or satisfaction in many parts of my challenge or project.
    11. 11.I kept pushing towards a goal even when I was exhausted.
    12. 12.I felt guilty when I took a break from pursuing my goals.
    13. 13.I struggled to switch off mentally during time away from my challenge or project.
    14. 14.I kept pursuing a goal despite clear signs that I could no longer achieve it.
    15. 15.I found it very hard to tell others that something had not worked or that I had not reached a goal.

Optional — your answers are saved whether or not you leave it.

This questionnaire draws on peer-reviewed psychological research into goal pursuit, meaningful work, coping, recovery and work engagement, including studies by Gollwitzer and Brandstätter, Steger and colleagues, Carver, Sonnentag and Fritz, Wrosch and colleagues, and Schaufeli and colleagues. It supports reflection on undermobilisation, sustainable high performance and over-persistence. It is a research-informed coaching tool, not a validated psychological assessment.
